Balanced Brains = Balanced Behavior & Learning
An Epidemic of Brain-Related Issues
It’s that time of year where the air is a little bit cooler in the evenings, parents are buying their kids new clothes for the fall, and kids are starting to go back to school. As a kid, I always greeted this time of year with anticipation — what teachers would I have, what new friends would I make, and what fun new experiences would I have?!
Sadly, however, an increasing number of children in America may have reason to dread this exciting time of year. These are the up to 16% of American children who struggle with brain issues. Research shows that 9% of American children have ADD/ADHD, 4-6% have specific learning disabilities, 1% have autism. Personally, I am not a mom but I have 9 nieces and nephews and scores of good friends with children. My cousin and good friend, Sharon, is a mother of five. And of her five children, three of them have struggled with fairly significant brain imbalances and behavior problems. She knows first-hand what it’s like to see a child struggle with some of the hallmark signs of brain imbalances, including:
- Delays in development,
- Behavior problems,
- Speech and communication problems,
- Emotional problems,
- Social problems,
- Learning complications and delays,
- And more.
Brain imbalances cause an untold amount of suffering in both the children who struggle with them, and in their families who struggle to meet the sometimes overwhelming needs of these children. I’ve talked to Sharon many times on the phone when she would be at her rope’s end trying to cope with her children’s emotional volatility, special learning needs, and more!
She is wise to seek answers while they are young because when these children become adolescents and adults, many of them do not grow out of their problems but continue to deal with moodiness, learning issues, substance abuse, and eventually problems with forming healthy relationships and finding gainful employment.
All any parent wants is to raise their child to be healthy, happy, and able to make their way in this world. So often, issues such as ADD/ADHD, autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and more seem to thwart parents’ basic desires for their child’s well-being, present and future!
To Medicate or Not to Medicate . . .
Many parents are hesitant to give their children pharmaceutical drugs for these types of brain imbalances. Not only are they not effective for everyone, if they do work the benefits are short-term. Also, these drugs have never been sufficiently studied to determine long-term effects on the child’s developing brain.

What Causes Brain Imbalances?
What is happening in modern days that is causing rates of brain-related issues in children to skyrocket? Barbara Schwartz, MA of Equlibrium and expert on childhood brain issues, says that many brain imbalances are due to improper communication between the two hemispheres of the brain, and can be exacerbated by:
- Insufficient diet (high in white flour & white sugar),
- Petrochemicals in the system (from plastics, pesticides, etc…)
- So-called “exito-toxins” from MSG, artificial food coloring and flavoring, and artificial sweeteners,
- Damage due to toxins in vaccines,
- Exposure to alcohol and drugs en utero,
- Genetic weakness.
I would also add that research is now showing that bad gut flora is a major culprit in throwing the brain out of whack and must be addressed for optimal healing to occur.
Real Solutions for ADD/ADHD, Autism, and More?
While brain imbalance issues should be addressed on an individual basis, Barbara Schwartz, MA has two broad recommendations that have been shown to help both children and adults who struggle with issues related to the brain. No drugs necessary.
1) Use Essential Oils for Brain Health –
Essential oils can be used by people of all ages to promote better communication between the hemispheres of the brain, and for improvement in any and all of the areas listed above.
Essential Oils have been used to support:
- Focus, concentration and learning challenges,
- Autism recovery,
- Hormonal balancing,
- Reducing stress naturally without side effects,
- Immune system strength & improvement,
- Cleansing the body of toxins to achieve serene balance.
Essential oils work by oxygenating and enlivening the body’s cells, including those in the brain. They can help to clear the cell membranes of toxic chemicals that may be interfering with proper neurotransmitter and hormone balance. They can help to literally heal emotional traumas and clear emotional baggage that may be keeping children from thriving. It has even been postulated that certain essential oils may help to heal issues on the level of the DNA!
Peace & Calming essential oil soothes stresses, lavender is great for all-around relaxation. Valor can help instill a feeling of confidence, and frankincense has been shown to go through the blood-brain barrier and promote brain balance on multiple levels.
Vetiver is a top choice for ADD/ADHD, while Grounding essential oil blend can help children and adults alike to be more firmly planted in reality. Brain Power is an excellent choice to help promote mental clarity and focus. White Angelica helps to uplift and protect from negativity.
To use the oils, inhale, apply a drop or two to the tips of the big toes, the temples, or forehead. Valor, Peace & Calming, and Grounding are great on the feet while White Angelica is fantastic on the shoulders. Peace & Calming and lavender can also be diffused. The oils can be used 2-3x/day or as needed.
Please steer clear of cheap, perfume-grade essential oils available at your health food store and many online venues — these can do more damage than good!
2) Do the “Cross-Crawl”
Besides using therapeutic-quality essential oils for brain health, Barbara Schwartz also recommends a simple exercise called the Cross-Crawl.
“Crawling establishes the patterning that allows the energies to cross over from each hemisphere to the opposite side of the body. This is one of the reasons an infant’s learning curve increases exponentially with the ability to crawl, and children who do not crawl often develop learning disabilities. . .
The Cross Crawl is based on the fact that the left hemisphere of your brain needs to send information to the right side of your body, and the right hemisphere needs to send information to the left side. If energy from the left or right hemisphere is not adequately crossing over to the opposite side of your body, you cannot access and utilize your brain’s full capacity or your body’s full intelligence.”
- Energy Medicine, Donna Eden, p. 71
For instructions on how to do the Cross-Crawl, listen to the recording of our interview with Barbara Schwartz below.
3) In addition to Barbara Schwartz’s sage advice, I also highly recommend the GAPS Diet for families with children who struggle with brain imbalances. Stay tuned later this week for more information on the GAPS Diet and for recipe ideas for kids’ snacks and school lunches that can help get the brain imbalances at their root!

Testimonials –
“While visiting a friend my son could not sit still. He stayed in one place on the sofa but kept bouncing up and down. My friend suggested trying Peace & Calming Oil. We started using the oil at night in a diffuser. He slept so much better and started his day more focused. We put drops of the oil on a tissue and he kept it in his pocket when he went to school. We continued to use the Peace & Calming at night for many years. This was the beginning of successfully overcoming his ADHD.”
- Carolyn M., CA
“I am a mother of a 4 year old with ADHD, Mood Disorder, PDD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), and OCD. Bedtime has always been the worst time of the day. He would struggle with everything from his covers being messed up, his pillow is too flat, to fluffy, no matter what it was one issue after another.
I began rubbing one drop of Lavender oil on each of the bottoms of his feet about a half hour before bedtime. He starts settling down and has even began asking to go to bed. We have now added a drop to his pillow at bedtime too. Lavender oil has made bedtime so much less stressful in our household! I don’t know what I would do without it!”
- Mandy L., IN
“Working with a young mentally retarded adult with autism, I used an oil called Brain Power. Within 48 hrs of applying 3-4 drops (x 3 times) of Brain Power to the back of her head (at the brain stem area). According to the woman’s supervisor, she had the best day she had experienced since joining the care program 9 months prior. The supervisor went on to say the young woman was filled with laughter, and was being proactive with her co-workers. Even more remarkable was the leadership role the young woman took that day, by hosting and teaching other special needs adults how to play a card game. This was a complete turn around for her personality and ability to communicate!”

Hello, I know this is a little bit older post, but I was curious if you have ever heard of the Peaceful Child blend? It is supposed to be a blend of essential oils to help with ADHD, I just haven’t saw that many reviews and was wanting a holistic healers point of view before moving forward. Any help would be appreciated
