Comfort, Balance, & Protection for Struggling Survivors

Just recently I spent a transformative and illuminating week at the Young Living Grand Convention.  I had the opportunity to learn more about essential oils from some of the foremost experts in the world.  From essential oil pioneers, scientific researchers, and people who have powerfully benefited themselves and others, the presenters at the Young Living Convention provided all who attended with a true feast!

One presentation in particular got my special attention.  A woman named Risa Nakahira, a registered nurse in Japan, told us of her experience with using Young Living oils in the aftermath of the tragic 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami.  She went to work with her stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, and oils to help survivors and aid in the relief effort.

I took copious notes and I will share them here.

Devastation on a National Scale

On March 11, 2011 an earthquake hit off the coast of Japan and triggered a tsunami of monumental proportions resulting in the complete or partial destruction of over a million buildings, nuclear power plant meltdowns, and 15,854 confirmed deaths with around 3,000 people still missing.  Risa mentioned that in her area, one school — Ousu Elementary — suffered a 70% casualty rate of children enrolled.  Can you imagine that?  7 out of 10 kids in an elementary school taken from this earth in one day!

Towns and villages on the northern Pacific coast of Japan were obliterated, the landscape completely altered, rubble and noxious odors were everywhere.  Survivors were disoriented, stressed, and even among those who weren’t badly injured, many were in need of medical care.

In the immediate aftermath of the tsunami, those who survived the epic disaster suffered from shortages of medicines, long waits to see doctors, and too few people working at government relief points to assist all the many tens of thousands of displaced, hungry, and hurting people.

What Nurse Risa Nakahira Did

Risa worked with survivors and used lavender oil on those with high blood pressure.  For those traumatized survivors suffering from sleep disturbance, she used lavender, Peace & Calming, and frankincense oils.  In particular, she swept lavender oil onto the pillows in the shelters.

Risa found that the bathrooms at government relief facilities were filthy, and she disinfected surfaces  with Thieves and Purification oils.  As there were bad odors all around, such as the smell of rotting fish, Risa used Purification to deodorize the air at the facilities.  She used  lavender and Peace & Calming on the masks and relief materials to cover up the bad odors and also help relief workers feel more calm.

At the end of her presentation, Risa recommended the oils in the Essential Oil Survival Kit ( lavender, peppermint, lemon, Thieves, Peace & Calming, frankincense, Purification, Valor, and PanAway) along with a few others including cypress, Grounding, Endoflex, and orange oil as well as the Thieves waterless hand purifier.

 Lessons for Us

Risa showed us that one prepared, intact, and knowledgeable person willing to help can make a difference in the lives of many others in the aftermath of even serious disaster and that essential oils are indeed powerful tools to have on hand that can help not only with injury, but some of the many challenges and inconveniences that abound after disaster.

My Thoughts

In addition to Risa’s wonderful insights into using oils in a disaster, I recommend “101 Uses for 9 Essential Oils in a Disaster” to learn how to use the 9 oils for all types of injuries, infectious diseases, and other issues that can take place with flood, earthquake, hurricane, tornado, or other types of disasters.  And lastly, I also recommend Rosemary or Melrose oils to help the body detoxify from radiation.

Stay tuned for next week’s article where I will share my notes from an expert panel discussion at the Young Living Convention on preparing for pandemic.
