Do Drugs Really Heal Us?

Like most of you, I grew up taking drugs for various ailments.  Antibiotics for ear infections, cold medicines for cough and congestion, pain killers for headaches.  I even took the highly-toxic drug Accutane for acne when I was in college. The drugs I took helped reduce the troubling symptoms I was experiencing, but in no way did they heal the causes of my symptoms.  In most cases as soon as I didn’t have the drugs, the problems were back.  And not only that, the underlying causes of the symptoms I wanted to get rid of were usually even worse than before!

There are, of course, some instances where a drug may be a good solution.  Thyroid medication for people without a thyroid gland, for instance, or immune-suppressing drugs for people who had an organ transplant.  But I have found that this is the exception rather than the rule.

Here’s one scenario that is repeated constantly throughout our society – let’s say you have acid reflux issues, so you go to the doctor and he prescribes Nexium.  You’ve seen plenty of commercials about the “little purple pill that heals”, so you gladly fill the prescription.  You start taking the drug, and you no longer have acid reflux.  Great!  Problem solved, right?

Well, that depends.  If you are O.K. with taking the drug for the rest of your life you might be set.  But what happens when you try to go off the drug?  What’s really going on here?

In most cases, acid reflux is caused and exacerbated by chronic stress and improper dietary choices.  The symptom of acid reflux is a sign, a warning signal, that something isn’t right.  Something needs to change.

To illustrate, imagine you get keep getting letters from your bank telling you that you have overdrafted your account, and instead of making a deposit into your bank to rectify the situation, you rip the letters up and throw them away so you don’t have to look at them, or pull out a gun and shoot the postman.  Will that work?

Of course not.  Just as tossing out the letters from the bank won’t solve the problem causing the letters to be sent – the overdrafted account — Nexium cannot get to the root causes of the acid reflux – chronic stress and a diet that isn’t right for you.  And not only that, just as ignoring the letters from the bank will only result in the root problems getting worse and worse through time, it’s the same with covering up the sign of acid reflux while ignoring the stress and bad diet.

Ignoring an overdrafted account and just destroying the messages telling you that there’s a problem will usually result in calls from the bank or maybe even a collection agency!  Similarly, down the road it’s inevitable that the stress and dietary issues causing acid reflux will lead to more urgent signals/symptoms – heart disease, heart attack, or maybe even worse!

Until we address the root causes of unpleasant symptoms and disease, the symptoms we experience will get more and more urgent.  Even though they are trained primarily to prescribe drugs and perform surgeries, doctors themselves admit that at least 85% of all disorders they encounter with their patients are not optimally treated by drugs and surgery.

How much better to get to the root causes of our diseases through addressing how our lifestyle may be contributing to or causing us issues!  Modifying our lifestyle can be a challenge, but it is a challenge worthy of our effort as it can reap great rewards to our long-term health and happiness.

I can relate.

Years ago when I was 24 years old I woke up one day with the flu, and through time it spiraled downward into an illness known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.  Previously healthy and active, from September 1999 and on I spent every other day bedridden with debilitating fatigue.  I experienced severe insomnia along with the mind-numbing fatigue.   I would lie wide awake in bed each night with my heart racing for hours.  Sometimes I wouldn’t drift off to sleep until the sun was rising.  Sleeping pills didn’t work – they just made me feel drugged as I laid in bed frustrated and unable to sleep.

After about a year of this, I was able to get an appointment with a doctor who had a special clinic for people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.  I traveled to North Carolina and got a confirmed diagnosis and a prescription for three different drugs that modulate brain waves so I could finally sleep.  These drugs worked like a charm!

As long as I had my Neurontin, Klonopin, and Elavil I could sleep normally.  If I left them at home or ran out for even one night, I was back to that maddening insomnia.  About four years later when I decided I wanted to go off these drugs, I discovered just how addictive they were.  I learned that I would need to take several months to gradually wean off of them.

I started with Neurontin, and got muscle aches and irritability as a result.  Next, I went to Klonopin and had the ride of my life!  Not only did my severe insomnia return with a vengeance, but I would burst into tears at the drop of the hat and I even experienced altered perception.  I remember walking through the mall with my then-husband and feeling like I was not me, my feet were not mine, and I was not walking on the floor but floating in the air.

I did a little research and learned that there were clinics to help people get off drugs like Klonopin – benzodiazapenes of which Valium is an example – because they are so highly addictive and the side effects from going off them so severe!

I was determined to get off the drug, and was blessed to come across a supplement at the health food store that took away my drug trippy Klonopin withdrawal symptoms in less than an hour.  (GABA was the supplement, by the way, and I used it for about a year until my body adjusted to being off the drug.)

I was never able to go off the last drug Elavil without experiencing severe insomnia until a while later.  In 2005 I was introduced to therapeutic-grade essential oils from Young Living and with two of the oils (Peace & Calming and valerian), through time my severe insomnia resolved completely!  After about a year and a half I didn’t need anything to help me sleep!  Not only did the essential oils help me get to sleep, but the more I used them the less I eventually needed them.

During the time I suffered with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, I also went on the thyroid medication Synthroid.  Within a couple of days on Synthroid I had about twice as much energy as before.  I felt great!  So great, in fact, that I was able to go to Russia for a two-month study abroad program because of it.  While I was in Russia, however, I kept needing more Synthroid just to function.  About a week and a half before I was to return to the states, I was down to just one pill.  Thankfully at the last minute I met a Russian doctor who was able to tell me where to get the drug and I was able to finish out my time in Russia with no problem.

Just as with the medications I was on for sleep, when I was introduced to Young Living Essential Oils in 2005 I also found natural solutions for my thyroid issue (I used Thyromin) and was able to get off the Synthroid.  I actually got even better results with the oils and supplement from Young Living than with the drug, and I have been drug-free since that time!

In the ensuing years as I have become interested in preparedness, I became increasingly grateful that I was no longer dependent on drugs or medications of any kind.  It was clear to me that had any sort of serious disaster or economic collapse occurred when I was dependent on those medications, I would have been rendered completely non-functional and extremely vulnerable.

When You’ve Already Tried Everything — And It Doesn’t Work!

If you’ve ever struggled with overweight, you know that getting down to your optimal weight can be a lot easier said than done.  From health conditions that make it difficult to exercise to family and friends who constantly offer you foods that are less-than-ideal, to stress eating, food cravings, and hormone imbalance, there can be a number of obstacles to overcome in getting down to our ideal weight!

When I was in 6th grade, I was the chunky girl who completed the mile run in P.E. next to last — only after the really fat kid!  There were definitely times in my life where I felt frustrated watching some people eat a lot more food than me, and staying a lot skinnier.

At various times in my life I have been concerned not only about my weight — but more importantly –my health.  A 6-year bout with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and fibromyalgia that left me unable to work full-time led me to make some drastic changes in my diet.  For 2 years I went vegan, and ate a lot of raw foods too.  I completely went off sugar and refined carbohydrates.  I dropped 20 lbs in the process, getting down to a size 6 even though that wasn’t my main goal.

I have learned through my experience, as well as research, that some of the main diet ideas foisted upon us are a total crock.  Here are a few of the the top diet fallacies that you must be aware of for your health and weight’s sake.  You may have tried some or all of these fallacies and gotten frustrated in the process –

Common Diet Fallacies in Today’s Society

• Low-fat or fat-free foods are good for you and will help you lose weight.

• Diet foods with Nutra-Sweet or Splenda are good for you and will help you lose weight.  Sugar substitutes are great because they are calorie-free.

• It’s a good idea to consume soy for health and weight loss.

• Whole grains are great for you, and consuming them will help you lose weight.

The low-fat lifestyle promoted in Western society over the past 3+ years has been a total failure.  The truth is that we need saturated fats for optimal health.  The two types of fat we should avoid like the plague, however, are hydrogenated oils and soybean, canola, and cottonseed oils found in most processed foods.  These oils are usually genetically-modified and potentially toxic.  But as for me, I consume ample amounts of butter, coconut oil, and olive oil.  When I eat dairy foods, which is only small amounts, I get organic and full-fat.

And please don’t get me started on artificial sweeteners — feel free to watch the documentary Sweet Misery to get the scoop on the hazards associated with them.  Not only can they cause a number of health problems including insomnia, anxiety, neuropathy, restless leg syndrome, and many more, but studies show that people who eat “diet” foods with artificial sweeteners may actually be heavier than those who don’t!  If you ever consume artificial sweeteners, even in small amounts, I urge you to stop now!

Soy products should be consumed in moderation, and then only fermented soy such as miso, tempeh, and tamari.  Soy milk, tofu, and soy “meats” should be avoided as they can mess with the hormones and contribute to or cause fatigue and even weight gain, especially in individuals who have low thyroid function.

Whole grains harvested the old-school way are just fine for the individual with healthy gut flora, but can cause a multitude of problems for the person who has been consuming the Standard American Diet their entire life –including weight gain.

Over the years I even discovered that the vegan and raw foods diet, that was so great for me in the short-term by helping to deeply cleanse my body of toxins, was not a good long-term lifestyle option for me.  I did need some animal products in my diet for optimal health.

In subsequent years I have not only incorporated some animal products in my diet, but over the past few years I have also eaten more and more sugar and refined carbohydrates.  I have paid for it not only in terms of my health as these types of foods make me feel sluggish, but in weight gain as well — going back up to a size 10.

After all the experience and research I’ve done,  I have found a few principles for health that can not only help just about anyone lose their extra weight, but also undo most all health problems common to our society.  The two systems that I’ve seen that incorporate both of these principles and have each helped thousands of people heal from digestive disease, autoimmune problems, blood sugar issues, depression and other brain issues (even including schizophren, bi-polar, and AUTISM), and much more, are the GAPS Diet and Body Ecology Diet.  Here are those principles –

Key Principles for Weight Loss and Renewed Health

• Consume homemade fermented foods daily, preferably with every meal, including homemade yogurt, kefir, coconut water kefir, and fermented vegetables such as kimchi or sauerkraut.

• Consume homemade meat and bone broths frequently — perhaps daily and with every meal (ideally those made with animals raised without antibiotics or added hormones).

• Go off sugar, sweeteners, and (most) grains for a while — or reduce them greatly.

• Eat a variety of fresh vegetables, preferably organic.

If you suffer from just about any health condition and understand that lifestyle is the foundation of our health, then I encourage you to try either the GAPS Diet or Body Ecology Diet for 3-6 months to see what it will do for you.  If you are relatively healthy but want to be even healthier (and skinnier with younger-looking skin), then I encourage you to join me in incorporating principles from these systems into your life!  Of course, adequate physical activity is also a part of a healthy lifestyle, and the extra energy you’ll get with these shifts in diet will make that easier!

That Special Time of Year

Stay at Your Peak All Winter Long

With winter fast on its way, we hear a lot of talk on flu vaccines to keep us healthy, and not nearly enough on personal responsibility.  In our fast-food, microwave society where everyone wants an instant pill or miracle cure for every ill, let’s not lose sight of the fact that lifestyle is the biggest factor contributing to our health or lack thereof.

And because we live in a world given to use by a wise Creator, ample provision has been made for us in the medicinal properties of plants.  One of the most powerful ways that I have found to harness the magic of plant medicine is through therapeutic-grade essential oils.

A healthy lifestyle together with essential oils can help you and your loved ones stay happy, productive and well all winter long!

Ten Health Tips That Will Reap Dividends –

1.  You are what you eat. Really.   Besides proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and vitamins and minerals, our bodies have special needs when we are sick or fighting something off.  Avoiding sugar and dairy (and white breads) when fighting off an infection will give your immune system the extra umph it needs to kick viruses and bacteria to the curb.  I like to give my body extra help with NingXia Red — a delicious nutrient infusion that has the antioxidant levels of 4 pounds of carrots in just 1 oz.!

2.  Drink your way to health. Water, that is.  Toss the soda, coffee, and even fruit juices.  Plenty of pure water (along with herbal tea) is one of your top tickets to health during this season, as well as year round.  Fresh vegetable juices are fantastic as well, but don’t feel obligated to go out and blow $350 on a juicer!  I like to add essential oils to my water for the flavor and the health effects.  Lemon and grapefruit are uplifting and detoxifying, peppermint is soothing and stimulating, and ocotea helps with blood sugar balance!

3.  Shake it, move it!! It can be more challenging to get adequate exercise in the winter, but it’s just as important.  Join a gym (and actually go), take some kind of fitness class, or worst-case scenario — become a mall-walker.  Studies show that inhaling peppermint oil before a workout helps improve stamina.

4.  Get some good shut-eye. Humans were made to work, and they were also made to rest.  Don’t cheat yourself of health by neglecting this important need.  How much do you need?  If you regularly find yourself getting sleepy throughout the day, you’re probably not getting enough.  Peace & Calming is my all-time favorite essential oil to help promote restful sleep.  Lavender oil is another top choice for sleep!

5.  Take it easy. Keep stress in check, especially during the holidays.  Moms — don’t feel obligated to having everything perfect or go overboard with holiday shopping, baking, and decorating.  Take time to relax and enjoy time with family and friends!  Use Valor, lavender, or Stress-Away 2-3x/day to promote health and well-being during stressful times.

6.  Catch some rays. It is now well-established that one of the best things you can do for your immune health is to get 10-15 minutes of direct sunlight on the bare skin every day.  Unfortunately, for those who live in cold, northerly climates this is practically impossible during the winter!  The next best thing is to supplement with Vitamin D.  Ours is dissolved in pure olive oil, and just one drop contains 500% of your daily value of Vitamin D!  Not only will it help prevent cold/flu, but if you get SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) in the winter, it can help ease that as well!

7.  Preempt winter bugs. What kills bacteria, viruses, fungus, and yeast on surfaces, in your body, and in the air as well?   Thieves essential oil blend is the most powerful solution I am aware of for preventing illness due to microbes, and helping your body heal more quickly from them as well.  Diffuse, apply daily to feet, or take internally — a couple of drops in a glass of water 2-3x/day.  Thieves is super-concentrated, cost-effective, portable, and won’t expire.  Best of all, it WORKS!

8.  If you do get sick . . . Use Thieves several times per day as described above.  For bacterial infection (green mucus is one indicator), I also use oregano oil.  This oil is best used by application to the arches of the feet and in homemade capsules.  Use 4-6 drops of oregano oil per capsule, along with a few drops of olive oil.  Take 3 capsules per day as needed.  Also take up to 10 drops of Vitamin D serum per day to help the body’s immune system fight illness.

I have had amazing results oil-pulling with Thieves.  Dispense a couple drops of Thieves oil on the tongue, then take in about 1 Tbsp. of cold-pressed sesame or sunflower oil.  Work the oil through your mouth (like you’re chewing it) for about 20 minutes when the oil is thick and milky-looking.  This is pulling toxins out of your body and killing microbes throughout your system at the very same time!  When you’re done, spit oil into a jar and rinse mouth out with water and another drop of Thieves.  Brush teeth.  Do this on an empty stomach, and up to 3-4x/day when ill.  Oregano oil is too caustic for use in oil-pulling.

9.  For respiratory issues, ditch the Vap-o-Rub and loosen up congestion with the real deal –  R.C. and Raven essential oils blends are formulated with 4 varieties of eucalyptus oils and other power aromatics that will soothe and heal respiratory issues.  Diffuse, inhale, apply to chest and balls of the feet.  Frankincense oil is another powerful oil for respiratory issues.  Apply a few drops to chest and follow with a hot compress (a hot wet washcloth, a layer of saran wrap, and a towel).  Keep on chest until washcloth is cool.

10. Purify indoor air — I don’t know about you, but I live in a part of the country where you almost need a gas mask to walk around outside during the winter.  Whether the air is that bad where you are or not, keeping indoor air clean and pure during the winter months should be a priority.  I like to diffuse Purification oil to freshen stale indoor air as well as kill germs, mold spores, and detoxify the air from impurities such as heavy metals and chemtrails.

As a side-note, for those individuals who struggle with asthma (which gets a lot worse in polluted winter air), apply a couple of drops to the balls and tops of feet 2x/day and inhale.  I’ve seen many people get off their inhalers in this way.

Mom, I don’t feel well . . .

Runny noses, sneezing, coughs, nausea, vomiting, earaches, eye infections and sore throats.  What child hasn’t missed school with symptoms such as these?  Beyond the nuisance of routine illness and having to see children suffer, the collective cost of over-the-counter drugs, doctor visits, prescription drugs, and parents’ sick-days to care for their children is inestimable.

1.  Common Cold

Modern medical authorities admit that there is no cure for the common cold.  What they mean to say, however, is that there is no pharmaceutical drug that can cure the cold.  We have been conditioned to run to the drug store or to the doctor for a pill or syrup to cover up our symptoms when we get sick.  Further, the overuse of antibiotics is contributing to the development of antibiotic-resistant super-bugs.

There’s a much better solution.  Therapeutic-grade essential oils (not cheap, perfume-grade oils available at health food stores and elsewhere) can be a powerful help.  Some essential oils, such as our Thieves blend, have been university tested and found to kill bacteria and viruses.  Others can open the respiratory tract.  With these essential oils, you will get your child up and running in no time!

Thieves – Use 1-2 drops on the feet daily as a preventive measure.  Diffuse for 15-30 minutes 2-3x/day to kill airborne microbes.  Dilute 50/50 in olive oil and apply on throat and lymph glands to speed healing.

Peppermint – 1-2 drops on the feet has been shown to lower fever within 15 minutes in most cases (dilute in olive oil for small child or baby).  Drop on pillow before bed to open sinuses while sleeping (this is too strong for children under 2).  Diffuse, for older children and teens dab diluted over sinuses if they are clogged.

Lemon – Drop 1-2 drops directly on tongue and swallow.  Place a few drops in hot water with honey (lemon juice optional) for a soothing tea.  Diffuse.

Frankincense – Inhale.  Diffuse.  Apply a few drops to the chest with a hot compress to break up congestion.  (A hot compress consists of a hot wet washcloth over essential oils on the chest followed by a layer of saran wrap and a towel.  Let it sit for 5-10 minutes.)  Dilute 50/50 in olive oil for small child or baby.

2.  Stomach Flu

Few things are worse than a child with diarrhea, vomiting, and fever.  Not only is it unbearable to watch a child suffer so much, but complications including severe dehydration and excessive weight loss can result from the stomach flu.  With these essential oils, your child’s experience with the stomach flu is very likely to be much shorter and sweeter.

Peppermint – Massage over the stomach (dilute for children under 2).  For older children, have them take a drop in a glass of water every few hours.  Apply to stomach reflexes of feet, which are located on the bottom of the foot exactly between the big toes and heels.  Inhale.  Diffuse

Thieves – Apply 1-2 drops 2x/day to feet.  Take 2-3 drops internally 2-3x/day in water or in homemade capsules diluted with a few drops of olive oil. Diffuse.

3.  Ear Infection

Chronic earaches in children can lead to many days of missed school for the kids, and days of sick leave for mom or dad.  They are painful to the child, and chronic ear infections can put quite a strain on the pocketbook with repeated doctor’s visits, prescriptions, and even surgeries in some cases.

How much better to nip earaches in the bud with any of these essential oils –

Purification, lavender, and Thieves oils have been shown to be effective in getting rid of ear infections as well as preventing them from coming back.

Choose an oil and apply 1-2 drops behind the ears (along the bony ridge and past the jaw line) 2-3x/day.  Dilute 1-2 drops of essential oil with warm olive oil on a cotton ball, and place it in the ear socket overnight.   Apply 1-2 drops to bases of 3^rd and 4^th toes, which corresponds with the ear reflexes.  Never pour essential oils inside the ear canal.

4.  Pink Eye

Crusted over, itchy, oozy eyes are no fun for anyone.  Even diffusing our essential oils in your child’s bedroom while they sleep while help heal this condition in no time!

Purification, lavender, frankincense, and Thieves may be used to help heal up pink eye or conjunctivitis, and have helped many people heal extremely quickly from these infections while avoiding antibiotics.

Diffuse, or apply strait or diluted around the eye socket 2-3x/day for a few days, taking care not to get in the eyes.  Apply to base of 2^nd and 3^rd toes, the areas that correspond to the eye reflexes.

5.  Sore Throat

As annoying as it may be, a sore throat is our body’s way of telling us it is working hard to fight something off.  Train your child to tell you as soon as they feel any scratchiness or pain in their throat so with using the essential oils, full-blown illness might be avoided.

Thieves – Dilute 50/50 and apply to outside of throat and over glands.  Older children may take a drop in a glass of water 2-3x/day.  Really hard-core people (adults and teens) may place a couple of drops on the tongue, swallow, and drink a glass of water to wash it down.  Don’t try this last one with little kids.

Lemon – Drop 1-2 drops directly on tongue and swallow.  Place a few drops in hot water with honey (lemon juice optional) for a soothing tea.

Essential Oils — Not Just for Emergency

The week before last I had the opportunity to go to Hawaii, and I took it!  I got my ticket one day and left the very next.   I traveled lite, but there are some things I made sure to bring with me — a swimming suit, sunglasses, and my Essential Oil Survival Kit.  I won’t go very far without it.  Here’s why –

Lavender –

While in Hawaii, I used my lavender oil to heal minor sunburn (I’ve used it in the past for major sunburn too).  I just mixed a few drops of it with fresh aloe vera gel from that we got from the side of the road and applied it on site.  I used it for allergies — just a drop or two on the tongue instantly cleared up my congestion, itchiness, and sneezing from allergies!  I also had a small mishap with a razor.  As I was reaching into my toiletry bag, my razor caught me on the pinkie finger and cut right through the nail.  Lavender instantly stopped the bleeding, which was pretty severe, and helped the cut to heal quickly.  And I didn’t have to worry about infection because lavender is great for disinfecting wounds!

Peppermint –

We stayed with friends in Hawaii, and their little girl got an upset stomach and was throwing up.  We used peppermint oil (just a couple of drops on the feet) to help soothe her digestive system.  We also inhaled it from time to time to help with some congestion issues from allergies or lingering colds.  It worked amazingly to open up the sinuses.  I was also applying it to an itchy rash on my neck, and it was helping the itch to subside.  Nobody got any headaches, but if they had, a couple of drops of peppermint oil applied to the pain would have nipped it in the bud!

Purification —

This one came in handy when we were at Waimea Falls and decided to sit down on the lush, green ground.  We found that sand fleas and mosquitoes also enjoyed the greenery.  I pulled out my Purification oil and rubbed a few drops of it it on my arms and legs.  Everywhere I put the Purification oil was fine — no insect bites — but the spots I missed got nibbled on quite a bit!  Thankfully, I dabbed Purification on the bites after the fact and they never got itchy or inflamed.

Thieves –

We used Thieves oil as well as the Thieves spray to help with sore throat and to help our immune system handle cold viruses.  Just a few sprays of the Thieves spray in the throat worked wonders for our host, who used the spray before bed when she had a horrible, painful swollen throat and woke up the next morning feeling great!

PanAway –

Thankfully, on this trip nobody got any sprains or injuries.  If they had, PanAway would have been my first choice to use.  But my friend did have a sore tailbone from sitting on airplanes.  She applied a drop on site, and the pain went away!

Lemon –

One of my friends used lemon oil in her water during our trip to Hawaii.  Not only does it taste great, but it’s cost-effective and good for you!  This is sooo much better than buying expensive flavored waters from the grocery store, not to mention unhealthy sodas.

Peace & Calming –

We used this oil to calm down our friends tw0-year-old when she was fussy.  Just a drop on the feet or a quick inhalation does the trick!  It’s also great on fussy adults.  =)  But as we were in Hawaii, there was little fussing going on . . .

Frankincense –

Just as I do at home, in Hawaii I used frankincense morning and night on my skin to help reverse sun damage and prevent wrinkles.  I just add a drop to my natural moisturizer and massage it into my skin.  It’s great for women and men who don’t want to age before their time.  We also used frankincense to promote a meditative atmosphere.

Valor –

Valor is great to promote both deep relaxation and focus at the same time.  It’s the one oil I use on the feet of all my reflexology clients to start out their session.  It’s also the one oil I didn’t use on my vacation to Hawaii — I guess the ocean waves, sunshine, virgin pina coladas, and fresh tropical fruit we indulged in gave us all the relaxation and focus we needed!

My Experience with Pain

Have you ever had a killer headache that laid you out flat for a day or two?  Have you ever sustained an injury from sports, recreation, or accident?  Or do you know someone who struggles daily with pain because of a chronic problem such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, or tendonitis?

Even though I’ve been luckier than many, I’ve experienced some pain in my lifetime through chronic, debilitating migraines as a child, a 6-year bout with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and fibromyalgia, and a few injuries including a broken arm and sprained ankle.

More recently, I have voluntarily subjected myself to situations that can cause pain in my martial arts training.  Above is a picture of my arm after a failed attempt at breaking an iron well pump handle (a few months later I succeeded at breaking the very same iron piece with no injury .

Until just a few years ago, I relied on Tylenol and Ibuprofin for headaches and injuries and was on prescription drugs for chronic pain due to fibromyalgia.  But pharmaceutical pain killers — even Tylenol — come with a whole host of negative side effects including damage to the liver and kidneys.

Zimbabwe, Iceland, Greece — are we next?

These days, you have to be living under a rock to not notice the economic unrest right in our own backyard.  The Occupy Wall Street protests in New York’s Zuccotti Park have spread throughout the nation as disgruntled citizens of all political persuasions express their discontent with economic policies that have fleeced America’s middle class.

Natural disasters are localized events, wreaking havoc on a relatively small parts of the world at any given time.  As devastating as some natural disasters have been, including the Asian tsunami of 2005, Hurricane Katrina, and the more recent earthquake in Haiti, a more serious scenario to consider when preparing yourself and your families for emergency is the possibility of a global economic collapse.

Failed economies in such nations as Iceland, Greece, and Zimbabwe serve as a wake up call to the rest of us.  John Lipscomb of SurvivalistSeeds.com has compiled a list of the Top 10 Biggest Threats to Survival in World Economic Collapse.

Here are the threats, and some hard-hitting solutions to counteract them:

1.      No access to prescription medication.

The temporary unavailability of medications during natural disasters has caused death and suffering for tens of thousands.  Mortality rates in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, for instance, went up by 50% and experts agree that this is at least partially due to people running out of their medications and being unable to get more because of the disaster.

In the event of a global economic meltdown, prescription drugs could be unavailable to most of the world’s population — even right here in America — leading to potentially millions of needless deaths.  This is not necessarily because all of these people could not survive without drugs, but because they didn’t know of or have any alternative to their drug, or they knew of alternatives but neglected to take precautions.
