Your Prescription for Natural Headache Relief
If you have ever had a headache interrupt your day, join the club. 73% of Americans struggle with recurring headaches at least on an occasional basis. Headaches can range from annoying to debilitating and I’ve experienced both kinds. As a child, I suffered with chronic migraines. In more recent years, I’ll get an occasional bothersome headache if I’m dehydrated or overworked. Pain pills never seemed to work very well for me.
While mainstream medicine’s remedies can help kill the pain of some headaches for some people, they rarely get to the root of the problem. Not only that, they are less than ideal for regular use due to their toxic effects on the liver and kidneys.
As a reflexologist/holistic healer, I have seen a lot of clients over the years with headaches and it has been my pleasure to help my clients get rid of them. I’ve found that a combination of reflexology, acupressure, and essential oils works at least 99% of the time. Different pressure points and essential oils seem to work for different types of headaches.
Three Types of Headaches
Sinus headaches
Sinus headaches can be caused by allergies, hay-fever, sinus infections, or even dry air. They are characterized by a feeling of pressure or pain in the face — the forehead, behind the eyes, and the nose. Mainstream relief of sinus headaches calls for over-the-counter decongestants sometimes with prescribed antibiotics.
Tension headaches
Tension headaches are caused by stress, tense muscles, misalignments, poor posture, and even emotional triggers. Most people resort to pain killers to get rid of these headaches, which totally ignores underlying issues and leads to more and more frequent headaches until the underlying problems are addressed.
Vascular (migraine) headaches
Vascular headaches include migraines, and they are caused by the dilation or contraction of blood vessels in the brain which puts pressures on the surrounding nerves. This painful type of headache can be set off by dehydration, trigger foods and smells, high blood pressure, hormonal imbalance, blood sugar issues, and emotional triggers.
Over-the-counter pain killers don’t work as well on this type of headache, and even prescription drugs don’t work well for a lot of people.
Get Rid of Headache in 4 Simple Steps –
Whatever type of headache you suffer from, you can find relief that I’ve found almost always works immediately or within minutes!
1) Pick an essential oil from your Essential Oil Survival Kit and decide where to apply it –
Sinus headaches — Peppermint or Purification
Apply 1 drop straight (or neat) or diluted 50/50 in a high-quality vegetable oil on forehead, cheeks, bridge of nose, etc… (being careful to avoid the eyes and eyelids). Also, apply 1-2 drops straight on the toes (reflexes for the sinuses).
Tension or Vascular headaches — **Peppermint**, Lavender, or PanAway .
Apply 1 drop of peppermint, lavender, or PanAway straight (or neat) or diluted 50/50 in a high-quality vegetable oil on site of pain (temples, forehead, into the hairline, back of neck, etc…) and on big toes and thumbs. Alternatively, place a drop of peppermint or lavender (or one of each) on the tongue, then push on the roof of the mouth.
For severe pain, you can make your own all-natural essential oil pain relief capsules with blank gelatin capsules from your local health food store. Just pour in a few drops of olive oil and then 3-4 drops of the essential oil(s) of your choice. Take as needed.
To enhance the effect of any of the above methods, also apply a couple of drops of either Valor or Peace & Calming to the feet and shoulders.
2) Pick reflex areas in hands/feet to work and massage them
Reflexology is the principle that there are areas in the hands and the feet that correspond with all the organs, systems, and parts of the body, and that working these areas on the feet and hands can contribute to increased blood and nerve supply in the body.
Sinus headaches — Firmly massage the fingers, toes, and balls of feet paying particular attention to any sore areas.
Tension headaches — Firmly massage the fingers, toes, and reflexes for the spine and neck (up the arches of both feet from the heels to the tops of the big toes), and reflexes for the solar plexus and pituitary (see chart below).
Vascular headaches — Massage the areas indicated above for tension headaches, adding the kidney reflexes to the protocol.
3) Pick acupressure points to work and push on them
Acupressure is the art of pressing so-called acu-points along energy meridians in the body, and is part of the Chinese system of medicine. When these areas are stimulated, it can release blocked energy and can help alleviate unpleasant symptoms including headaches.
Sinus headaches — Using firm pressure applied with the thumb or index finger, hold each of these points for several seconds one-by-one making sure to get both sides of the body.

Testimonials
“Just after I first got started using essential oils, I had suffered with a sinus headache for about 36 hours when I was reminded to try my peppermint oil. I rubbed one drop on my forehead and another across the bridge of my nose and the sinus cavities on my cheek bones – within 10 minutes my headache was completely gone!”
Vicky G., OK
“I have suffered with migraine headaches since I was 9 years old. I am in my mid 40′s now. I am allergic to most medicine, and only found relief in aspirin. I was searching for an answer when a friend introduced me to pure peppermint oil. I am amazed and thrilled to say on average the headache will be gone in 10-15 minutes! I apply the oil directly or take in a capsule. If my sinus are acting up also I use lavender oil with the peppermint. It really works!!!!”
Kelly R., NY
“In the past, I’ve been in the emergency room on a number of occasions with headaches so severe that I would be given hard-core pain drugs. These drugs would only take about 50% of the pain away. I started seeing Julie and when I come in with a headache, every time she has been able to get rid of it completely with her combination of essential oils and reflexology/acupressure! Peppermint oil seems to work the best. No longer am I captive to my severe headaches!”
