I am a mother of six beautiful children.  Each of their deliveries were very different.  I delivered three at the hospital and three at home, ironically 5 of the 6 were delivered with midwives.   There is a huge difference with delivering at home verses the hospital.  With my first home birth I made sure I read everything I could so I could be prepared in case of an emergency or if for some reason we had to deliver without the midwife.  I also had my husband read key information so he would know what to do. I didn’t know about essential oils for my first home birth.  This birth was long for me as I was delivering a large baby, but the delivery was still positive.

My second home birth I had been using Young Living Essential oils for over a year and decided to use them in preparation for my delivery. My first research was about Group B Strep, in which I wanted to take precautions, but I also wanted to avoid having to take an antibiotic. I used Thieves on the bottoms of my feet and I also used some Oregan grape for the 6 weeks before my due date.  Next I had to decide which oils I would use for my delivery and chose two key oils, lavender and geranium.  I would recommend these for anyone delivering a baby.

About five weeks before my due date I massaged the perineum every morning with lavender and geranium mixed in with coconut oil.  These two oils help the tissues be supple and to prevent tearing during delivery.  Massaging these oils on my tummy help prevent stretch marks as well as soothe during contractions.  I again reviewed all my reading material as I had forgotten some of the details of childbirth since it was almost 3 years since my previous delivery.

On my due date as my contractions began to get closer I called my midwife to let her know I was close, but thought I still had a while.  I hung up the phone, transitioned and told my husband I was ready to deliver.  Much to his surprise, he wasn’t ready for that and called the midwife back.  She told him to tell me not to push.  Anyone who has had a baby knows that when it’s time, it’s time!  So I coached my husband through the delivery and he delivered our fifth child.  This was the easiest delivery with little pain, no tearing, and a great recovery.  I believe the oils were very key in preparing my body for this quick delivery.

My most recent birth was also a quick easy delivery with no tearing.  I learned more uses of the oils for this delivery. I used peppermint when I had a stomach ache by rubbing it around the navel.  Again my two favorites are lavender and geranium.  I used this mixture for massaging my abdomen after delivery to help with the after birth contractions.  Also these oils massaged over the abdomen are helpful with slowing down excessive bleeding as well as helichrysum.  Geranium is great for helping the umbilical chord dry up and fall off.

We also had an urgent moment with the baby right after birth.  She got some of the mucus stuck in her throat and was having some trouble getting a good breath of air.  I decided I needed to think quickly as what could help and had my husband get  the bottle of lavender off of the counter and put a couple of drops on her back.  Within about 5 to 10 seconds, much to our relief, she was able to clear the mucus from her throat and breathe freely.

The oils are great for so many things. I have safely used them for pregnancy, delivery, postpartum, as well as on my infants and children.  I am so grateful to know about the Young Living essential oils!
